Lady Bears Ink Dual Sport Athlete

Barclay College is pleased to announce that Kierstin Newberry, from Attica, Kans., will be coming to Barclay College in the Fall to pursue a degree in Elementary Education. Newberry is a dual-sport athlete that plans to play both women’s volleyball and basketball in 2017-18.

“I chose Barclay because I like the small town feeling and I believe I can be successful at a college that really cares for their students,” said Newberry.

The 5’5” talented athlete has had several achievements on the court for the Bulldogs. She is a defensive specialist and setter in volleyball and her primary position in basketball is shooting guard. In volleyball, as a setter, she earned All Heart of the Plains honorable mention. In basketball, she was named All Heart of the Plains first team, and she was honorable mention 1A-II All State by the Wichita Eagle and Topeka Journal.

Newberry brings a wealth of experiences and leadership skills with her to Barclay as well. While at Attica High School, she has been the Senior Class President in addition to participating in volleyball, basketball, National Honor Society, and Prepare to Launch. She also serves as the President of 4-H in Harper County.

“We’re excited to add Kierstin to our team next year,” said head women’s basketball coach Marcus Mitchell. “She is an elite athlete that can shoot the ball well. She is very active in the passing lanes on defense, and she has a great feel for the game.”

Head women’s volleyball coach Larry Lewis concluded, “I’m looking forward to Kierstin joining our volleyball team. Coming from a strong high school program at Attica, she has good fundamentals, a knowledge of the game, and a winning attitude on and off of the court.”

Kierstin is the daughter of Dustin and Lynda Newberry.
