Lady Bears Split Two In Iowa

The Lady Bears got back on the court for the first time since Christmas Break. The team traveled north to face Midwest Christian College Conference opponents Faith Baptist Bible College (Ankeny, Iowa) and Emmaus Bible College (Dubuque, Iowa).

The Lady Bears got off to a great start on Friday night against host Faith Baptist. Their ball movement and shot selection against the Eagles’ zone defense proved to be the difference as they were able to pick up their first MCCC win of the season 55-42. The Bears balanced scoring attack was led by freshmen Kaitlyn Hiser’s (Glenrock, Wyo.) 14 points and 7 rebounds and Leilani Carrasco’s (Eaton, Colo.) 11 points and 6 assists, while junior Mycha Owens (Cullison, Kans.) chipped in 10 points.

Saturday morning, Faith Baptist hosted the Bears match-up with last year’s MCCC’s regular season and tournament champions, Emmaus Bible College. The Eagles jumped out to a 25-2 lead to start the game and the Lady Bears were never able to recover. The Eagles zone defense gave the Bears problems the whole game as they forced an excessive amount of turnovers in addition to holding the Bears below 25% shooting from the field. The Eagles would defeat the Lady Bears 76-30.

“On Friday night, we were able to limit our turnovers, and didn’t settle for outside shots against the zone defense,” said head coach Marcus Mitchell. “The next game we didn’t take care of the basketball, and settled for outside shots. Going forward, I hope we can be more consistent with limiting our turnovers and with our shot selection.”

The Lady Bears host Ecclesia College (Springdale, Ark.) on Tuesday evening at 5 pm. and then have their conference home opener on Saturday at noon against Central Christian College of the Bible (Moberly, Mo.).
