Bears Continue Reading Initiative with USD 474

Every Spring for the past four years the Barclay College Men’s Basketball Team has partnered with USD 474 to be a part of the educational process for the youth of Haviland. This year, much like the last two years, members of the team took part in a reading initiative.

On the afternoon of Tuesday, March 11th, eight members of the men’s basketball team and two of their coaches read Dr. Suess books to both kindergarten and first grade students at the elementary school.

“When members of the basketball team come to read to the first graders their faces light up!  The entire class knows about Barclay College and having a “very big person” from the college, let alone the basketball team, read to them is awesome,” First Grade Teacher Joyce Bryan explained.

This partnership is another important component of the Men’s Basketball program and the development of their players. According to Head Coach Royce Bryan, the team is constantly looking for opportunities to give back to the local community and to make a positive impact on kids. “This is one of the best opportunities we have available. It’s hands on and is a great teaching moment for both mentors and students alike.”

“It forms a bond between our classes and Barclay College students,” Joyce Bryan added. “Thank you Men’s Basketball Team for taking the time for a “little person.””
