BC Womens Basketball Finishes Strong

The 2011-12 edition of the Barclay College Lady Bears was quite a ride. The season began with high expectations based on the year before, and the number of experienced returning players. However, life has a tendency to get in the way of even the best laid plans. Marriages, injuries, and a few other unforeseen issues zapped the Lady Bears of most of that returning experience. So the Lady Bears went back to square one and started building again.

After a disappointing 1-8 start the Lady Bears showed a lot of determination and perseverance to go 8-4 to close out the season, and finish with a record of 9-12. The Lady Bears finished 7th at the ACCA National Tournament and had League as well as National Recognition for it’s players. Hannah Williams was named 2nd team MCCC, and Kaylee Miller received Honorable Mention. On the National Level, Hannah Williams was named 2nd team All-American, and Kaylee Miller was named an Academic All-American.

Statistically, Hannah Williams led the team in scoring and rebounding at 16.8 pts and 5.8 rebounds. Hannah shot a solid 39% from the 3 point line and an outstanding 85% from the free throw line. Kaylee Miller was second in rebounding with an average of 5.4, followed by Jessica Davis at 4.2. Maurissa Shaffer, a 2nd semester transfer came in and solidified the point guard spot, leading the team in assists at 3.9/game.

The Lady Bears will lose some players, but return a very strong core that should make the Lady Bears of 2012-13 an exciting team to watch!

Head Coach Brad Lingafelter stated, “This team was fantastic. We had some really debilitating circumstances at the beginning of the year that set us back quite a bit. It is easy to say that a team and a coach can just brush that adversity aside and keep plugging along, but, as this year’s team learned, it was a tough climb. We completely changed what we were doing offensively and relied on the great defensive principles Coach Ballard worked on throughout the season to forge a new identity. The way the ladies came together as a team, competitively and from a chemistry standpoint, was really fun to watch.”

Go Lady Bears!!!
