Bears Announce New Head Volleyball Coach

Barclay College athletic department is pleased to announce that Larry Lewis will be the new head women’s volleyball coach for 2014. Lewis was the volunteer assistant for the Lady Bears volleyball in 2013. Prior to that, Lewis coached at Haviland High School for 6 years from 1978-1987. During that span his teams accumulated 141 wins and 32 loses, won 6 league championships and qualified for the Kansas State Volleyball Tournament two different years, one of which they finished in fourth place.

In his 35 years in education (Kansas and California), he has taught physical education 16 years, been an assistant principal 16 years, and been a principal for 3 years. He has coached basketball, volleyball, track, tennis, and softball at both the junior high and high school level. He has also served as the Director of Recreation for Rose Drive Friends Church in Yorba Linda, California for 19 years. While at that post he directed adult sports leagues, ran a youth basketball league of 400 kids for 15 years, and directed summer basketball camps.

“It is a privilege to coach Barclay athletes who desire to be ambassadors for Christ at school, in the community and on the court.  It is my desire to help each player grow first in Christ, and secondly, in their volleyball skills. Athletes are confronted with many types of circumstances that run parallel to life situations, and it is a perfect opportunity to build Christ-like character and eternal values. True victory only comes when athletes please the Lord with their effort, attitudes and actions on and off the court. My goal is to help athletes understand that they train and play for an audience of One- Jesus Christ,” commented Lewis in response to his coaching philosophy.

Lewis received his BS in Christian Education from Fort Wayne Bible College (Fort Wayne, IN) and then continued his education at Friends University (Wichita, KS) where he received a BS  in Physical Education/Health. He also obtained his MS in Education from Wichita State University (Wichita, KS).

He is married to Sheryl, for 35 years, and they have three children (Lyndie, Landon, and Brock). Lewis also currently serves as the Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Barclay College.
