BC Volleyball’s Comeback Season

After a year of being unable to field a volleyball team at Barclay College, this year’s team proved that they were contenders in the Midwest Christian College Conference. With the team composed of four upperclassmen and five newcomers, the chemistry of the team grew by leaps and bounds as the season progressed. In the end, when it counted the most, they played some of their best volleyball.

Those that had a chance to watch them play this year, saw a team that was solid fundamentally; was scrappy on the court; and represented Christ in their actions and encouragement of one another. In addition, they were the only team in the MCCC to take perennial powerhouse Manhattan Christian (Manhattan, Kans.) to five sets before losing a thriller on senior night.

The team finished fourth in the MCCC during the regular season, and fifth in the conference tournament. Freshman Alyssa Swonger (Pratt, Kans.) received a ton of well-deserved postseason recognition. She was named to the 1st Team All Southwest Region and 2nd Team All-MCCC while freshman Kaylie Fruh (Placentia, Calif.) was named 2nd Team All Southwest Region.

Head coach Larry Lewis concluded about the season, “I could not be more pleased with the steady, consistent progress these ladies made throughout the season. It’s difficult to turn a program around in one year, but this team made the rest of the conference take notice of Barclay volleyball and what is ahead in the future.”
