Bears Continue MCCC Success

Saturday afternoon, the Bears looked to continue their recent MCCC dominance in a home game against St. Louis Christian College (Florissant, Mo.). Last season the Bears went undefeated in conference play as well as winning the conference tournament, but with a brand new team, they eagerly looked to get off to a strong start in MCCC play.

With game time temperatures hovering in the upper 70s, it was a beautiful afternoon on the pitch. Twenty minutes into the first half, sophomore Brian Godoy (Katy, Texas) opened the flood gates for the Bears. He powered a right-footed rocket by the Soldier goalkeeper to put the Bears up 1-0. Minutes later senior Brandon Palmer (Newton, Kans.) crossed a ball to the far post where sophomore Mason Vang (Minneapolis, MN) masterfully headed it into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead. To close out the first half, sophomore Canadian Justin Calicchia scored the first of two goals on the game and Godoy added a second as well.

With a 4-0 half-time lead, the Bears continued their dominance in the second half. Calicchia calmly dribbled through the Soliders backline and easily scored his second goal of the afternoon. Then newly acquired sophomore David Greer (Center Grove, Ind.) crossed a ball just over the Soldiers goalie to a waiting freshman Garet Williams (Lawton, Okla.), who easily volleyed in his first collegiate goal. The 6-0 win for the Bears marked the 10th consecutive victory for the Bears over MCCC opponents and improved their record to 2-2-1 overall.

Ozark Christian College (Joplin, Mo.) will be the next opponent for the Bears as they try and extend their conference winning streak. Game time in Joplin is set for 4 pm on Friday.
