Lady Bears Cruise on Homecoming Weekend

Barclay’s Lady Bears had a pair of games over the weekend at Hockett Auditorium. The weekend started with a game against the Dallas Christian Crusaders on Friday night and then finished on Saturday afternoon with their homecoming game against Grace University of Omaha, NE.

Things looked bleak to start the game on Friday night as the Lady Crusaders came out scorching hot from behind the 3 point line. However, the Lady Bears showed a lot of poise to close the gap before Dallas went on a little run to take a 47-36 lead at halftime. In the second half, it was the Bears turn to light up the nets from behind the arc. Using an aggressive man-to-man defense and phenomenal 3 point shooting, the Lady Bears roared back to win going away, 88-81. Sophomore Raelyn Epp was the catalyst as she scored 25 of her 33 points in the second half.

On Saturday, Grace University came to Hockett Auditorium. Grace has had a very good program over the last few years and the Bears were ready for the challenge. The first half saw the Lady Bears lead all 20 minutes, but Grace kept it close. The halftime score was 32-29. Once again the Lady Bears came out with an aggressive man-to-man defense and began to attack the basket on the way to building a 22 point lead. The Lady Bears cruised to the finish for a 67-54 win. Epp led the way again with 16 points, while Freshmen Brooke White and Mercedeez Bell chipped in with 14 and 12 points respectively.

Head Coach Brad Lingafelter commented following Saturday’s game, ” I have been seeing some signs of real mental toughness and focus begin to emerge over the past few weeks. Talent is not the issue. We have talent. What I see is a team that is beginning to compete in all three phases of the game and they are not letting bad stretches bury them. The whole team played great and I have to give special recognition to Raelyn Epp for a phenomenal weekend.”

The Bears were scheduled to play Tuesday, February 3rd at Hillsdale Free Will Baptist, but due to the weather, the game is being rescheduled for Thursday, February 13th in Moore, OK at 2:00 PM CST. This weekend two MCCC teams will pay a visit to Haviland. On Friday night, Calvary Bible College will be in town at 5:30 PM and then Ozark Christian will play the Bears at 1:00 PM on Saturday.
