Bears Down NAIA Southwestern 2-0

As the final seconds of Saturday nights BC Soccer game against NAIA Southwestern College (Winfield, KS) ticked off the clock, the Bears faithful were elated with the results. Playing a man down for the last 57 minutes of the match, nonetheless, the Bears still upset the Moundbuilders 2-0 in Haviland, KS.

The Bears set the tone in the 6th minute when a long cross was played into the box and Freshman Tyler Wright (Mulvane, KS) was able to beat the Moundbuilder  goalkeeper to the ball with his head and then calmly scored on an open net. Playing with great energy, the Bears seemed to control the game throughout the first half. Even when Sophomore Melvin Lara (Katy, TX) picked up his second yellow of the match in the 33rd minute and the Bears played a man down the remainder of the game, they still seemed in control. They maintained possession and continued to generate scoring opportunities throughout the first half.

Thanks to a strong and witty back line, the Bears remained ahead 1-0 deep into the match as they forced ten offsides calls on the Moundbuilders and Freshman Isaiah Shine (Houston, TX) preserved the lead with a goal line header. Moments later, Bear’s Freshman Josh Moore (Houston, TX) lined up a free kick from nearly 36 yards out that left the Moundbuilder’s keeper froze on the goal line and built the Bears lead to 2-0 with 12 minutes left in the match.

The win improved the Bears to 8-1 on the season after they earned their 7th win of the season the night before by beating Central Christian College of the Bible (Moberly, MO) 7-0. That win guaranteed the Bears at least a share of the Midwest Christian College Conference title for the second year in a row as they improved to 5-0 in conference with just one game remaining. Even though the Bears only led 2-0 at half, the second half was highlighted by two goals and two assists from Junior striker Kingsley Assibey (Accra, Ghana).

Tuesday, September 30th will be the next match for the Bears. They will host Dallas Christian College (Dallas, TX) in their final Southwest Region match at 7:00 PM CST in Haviland.
