Women’s Basketball Concludes Season at SW Region Tournament

On Thursday afternoon, the Bears traveled to Moore, Okla. to compete in the National Christian College Athletic Association Southwest Region Tournament. Barclay entered the tournament as the #6 seed and they would face-off against #3 Dallas Christian College in the opening round.

In the first half, the Bears did an outstanding job of attacking the basket and shooting consistently from the free-throw line, but they struggled to take care of the basketball against the Crusaders’ press and limiting their second chance points. The Crusaders would lead at halftime by the score of 38-28. In the second half, the Crusaders were able to use their depth and physical style of play to wear down the Bears. Dallas Christian would go on to defeat Barclay by the score of 88-60. Sophomore Haylee Beavers (Atlanta, Kans.) led the Bears with 20 points and 9 rebounds while freshman Leilani Carrasco (Eaton, Colo.) contributed 17 points and 5 rebounds.

Head Coach Marcus Mitchell concluded, “The scoreboard doesn’t indicate it, but this was arguably one of the best games we have played the entire season. Despite not having our starting center for the whole game and our starting point guard for the majority of the second half, I was impressed with our effort and how we competed for 40 minutes.”

On Friday afternoon, the NCCAA SW Region honored its top players in the region. Barclay College’s Carrasco earned All Region-Honorable Mention honors. The combo guard averaged 8.8 points, 7.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 2.5 steals for the Lady Bears this season.
