Bears Finish Off MCCC Play With Two Wins
Haviland, KS- Heading into their final two Midwest Christian College Conference regular season games, the Bears needed two wins to keep their hopes alive for a conference championship. On Friday they hosted Calvary Bible and then Ozark Christian was in town on Saturday. Friday night, the Warriors of Calvary took on the Bears for the second time in the last two weeks. Although the Warriors zone defense caused the Bears fits in their prior meeting, this time around the Bears knifed through the zone and built a 37-19 halftime lead on their way to a 77-56 victory. The Bears had five players in double figures in the scoring column. Saturday afternoon, the Bears were in for a real battle with Ozark Christian. In their prior meeting in Joplin, MO the Bears held a lead deep into the second half before the Ambassadors snuck out a two point victory. The only thing different about this match up was the end result. The two teams were evenly matched and the action was back and forth throughout until the Bears stormed back from eight points down to take the lead with four minutes remaining. Down the stretch the Bears made free throws and capped the game off with a dunk by Freshman Titus Gwess. The Bears stellar 29-32 free throw shooting performance and some timely three point buckets in the second half allowed them to pull out the victory 82-73. Sophomore Spencer Huiatt led the Bears with 21 points and five assists, Sophomore Charles Brodhead added 20 points and 9 rebounds, and Gwess chipped in 17 points. The Bears finished MCCC play 8-2 which was good for second place behind Manhattan Christian. Overall the Bears are 14-5 and will play their final home game against Central Bible College at 5:00 PM CST on Tuesday, February 5th. It will be the final home game for seniors Toney Hatton and Shane Brown.
