Bears Soccer Completes SW Region Play
On Tuesday, October 1, NCCAA DII #7 ranked Barclay College Men’s Soccer team traveled to Hillsdale Freewill Baptist College in Moore, OK for the second meeting of the season. The game was the final game for the Bears in the Southwest Region standings where they sat with a 2-0 record heading into the game.
The Saints jumped out to the early lead when a Saints player slipped through the Barclay defense for an uncontested 1 v. 1 with Senior goalkeeper Austin Ogle. A well-placed shot in the lower 90 just beyond the Ogle’s reach gave the Saints a 1-0 lead. Only moments later, the same player once again found an opening and duplicated his first shot to build the Saints lead to 2-0. The score remained the same until midway into the second half when Sophomore Kingsley Assibey found the back of the net with a header. The ball had ricocheted off multiple players right in front of the goal line before Assibey capitalized to bring the Bears within one. Even though Barclay seemed to control possession for an overwhelming majority of the game and outshot Hillsdale 14 to 4, they were unable to capitalize on several prime opportunities to tie the game up as the Saints preserved a 2-1 victory.
Barclay (7-2, 4-0) travels to Manhattan, KS to face #6 ranked Manhattan Christian on Tuesday, October 8 at 4:00 PM CST. The game has huge implications as the Bears are in the thick of things to win their first regular season MCCC championship.
