Bears Soccer Rolls in Opener

On a blistering Saturday afternoon, the Barclay College Bears soccer team began a new season in dominating fashion. The Bears hosted Calvary Bible College (Belton, MO), an MCCC opponent in a non-conference game. Last season the Warriors were able to beat the Bears twice, but not this time.

With a core group of returners, the Bears seemed to be in sync from the beginning, controlling ball possession from beginning to end. At the 28 minute mark, BC went up 1-0 on an own goal from Calvary off a Bears cross and the route was on as the Bears added five more goals before intermission. Freshman Melvin Lara scored from outside the box at the 19 minute mark to make it 2-0 and then Senior David Jaimes craftily lobbed one over the goalie’s head from near the center circle just four minutes later to make it 3-0. In the final ten minutes of the first half, Freshman John “Forrest” Turner punched one in from short range after the CBC keeper misplayed a cross, and then Sophomore Kingsley Assibey and Freshman Eli Dahir both connected on headers to push the score to 6-0.

In the second half, the ball rarely made its way onto the Bears half of the field. Senior Austin Ogle only had three shots on goal as he recorded his first shutout of the year. The Bears connected two more times on beautifully played through balls from the midfield to make the final score 8-0.

BC (1-0, 0-0) is back on the pitch at home Tuesday night at 8:00 PM CST against NCCAA Southwest Region opponent Hillsdale Free Will Baptist (Moore, OK).
