Bears Volleyball Season Opener

The Barclay Bears Volleyball team opened up the 2013 season on the road Tuesday night with a trip down to Bethany, Oklahoma to play NAIA Division II Southwestern Christian University.

As the first set got underway, it was evident this was the Bears first match of the year. The Lady Eagles of Southwestern would cruise to a 25-8 win to start the best of five match. With the first set behind them, the Lady Bears responded with a fury of offense, winning 25-19. The remaining two matches where hard fought but found the Bears coming up short 19-25 and 20-25.

Offensively,  Senior Sarah Sullivan led the way with seven kills while Senior Hannah Williams added four kills along with twelve digs. Defensively, Junior Morgan Stander had 14 digs and Junior Kalyn Switzer had nine assists.

Coach Shari Bryan had this to say about the season opener and how her team played, “Overall I was very pleased with the level of play for our first match. The girls pulled together and played well as a unit. As the match progressed, we found our rhythm in both offense and defense. I am excited to see where the season leads.”

The Lady Bears are back in action for their home opener on Friday, August 30th at 5:00 PM CST against conference rival Calvary Bible College (Belton, MO).
