Bears Win Under the Lights

Fresh off their 8-0 victory over Calvary Bible College (Benton, MO) over the weekend, the Barclay Bears soccer team was electric under the lights on Tuesday night. Hosting Hillsdale Free Will Baptist (Moore, OK), the Bears were able to take care of business in an exciting game on the pitch.

On a beautiful night for soccer, the Saints of Hillsdale found the back of the net first when, in the eighth minute of the game, Senior goalkeeper Austin Ogle couldn’t quite coral the ball after a diving save and the ball was punched in off the deflection. However, the Bears went on the offensive and had a multitude of opportunities in and around the box. Then in the 22nd minute, Senior David Jaimes played an amazing ball behind him to Sophomore Kingsley Assibey who easily out-maneuvered the keeper to knot the score up at 1-1.

The game seemed to be heading for overtime when, in the 65th minute, the Saints were whistled for a handball inside the goalie box, resulting in a penalty kick for BC. Assibey’s initial shot was blocked by the keeper but he was able to knock in the goal off the rebound to give the Bears a 2-1 lead. As the Saints frantically pursued the tying goal, the Bears countered in the final ten minutes of the match when Freshman Melvin Lara juked the final defender and curved a ball into the lower corner of the net from outside of the box to seal the victory.

The 3-1 victory improved the Bears to 2-0 on the season as they will be back in action at home this Friday night at 7:00 PM CST against Grace Bible College (Omaha, NE) and then at 1:00 PM Saturday against Faith Bible College (Ankey, IA).
